One of my favorite blog posts that I’ve ever posted was Benson’s birth story <click to read>. Baylor is about to turn 6 months and I’ve been meaning to write this post since he was born!
Bode’s birth story (which I am still meaning to write) was a 24 hour, exhausting labor and delivery, after my water broke in the middle of the night. Benson’s birth was easy, breezy – I was induced and had a quick and seamless delivery.
Of course, I would like to go into labor on my own, but i definitely have stubborn baby boys who like to stay warm and cozy in my belly. Bode and Benson were both 40 weeks and a few days when they were born. Many people told me the third baby will most likely come earlier – however that was not the case.
I thought I was in labor for at least a week, but once again, my due date came and went. Finally, at 40 weeks 3 days, Nick and I went in super early on October 1st for my scheduled induction (I secretly always wanted an October baby).
We arrived at the hospital around 5am, got all cozied up in our hospital room. I was hooked up to all the induction goodies, and we began the waiting game.
I like to get to experience some of the contractions for as long as I can, but I definitely don’t like to be in too much uncomfortable pain. So after a few hours of progressing I asked for the epidural.
Unfortunately this time, I had a horrible epidural procedure. Wow, even thinking about it makes me cringe. Basically, it took multiple attempts to give correctly insert the epidural. Every time the epidural was in place, I was in a lot of pain, I was having to yell out which side I was feeling pain and they would try to reposition everything. Definitely the worst part of all of my pregnancies.
Thankfully, the epidural ended up working great, I was able to relax and calm down a little bit after the nightmare of an epidural experience. I was barely two centimeters dilated when we arrived at the hospital and we were making slow progress. We were told by the nurse to plan for an hour per centimeter.
Thinking we had plenty of time- my mom, Nick, and his mom all went to grab snacks. While they were gone a new nurse came in to check on me. We had been preparing for a long haul with things moving slow. She checked me and said “do you want to have a baby in the next hour?” – I was like “absolutely!”. My body was so hard to move because of my epidural, so she literally lifted me up and put me on my side, she propped one of my legs up high and told me to take a 15 minute nap because we were going to have a baby within the hour!
It turned out that however the nurse positioned my body literally got things moving! By the time my family got back up to the room things were really progressing. When the next nurse came in I told her I think she should check me, and that I felt a lot of pressure. When she checked me the baby was right there. She had me roll on my side and close my legs, as my OB was a 20 minute drive away!
I was dying to push but the nurse was just trying to distract me by telling a random story. Once my OB was there it was showtime. 1 and a half pushes later, my OB told me to reach down and pull my baby out! What an incredible, undiscribable experience. I was able to get my hands under his arms to grab him, and then brought him onto my stomach. Then Nick cut the cord, and our third 8lb baby boy was in my arms!
